Getting married abroad: Indian documents you may need

Indian documents often needed to marry abroad: single status certificate, birth certificate, affidavits and apostille, and how to get them from abroad.

Updated 30 October 2026

Countries usually ask an Indian citizen marrying abroad to prove they are free to marry. That is often a single status certificate or affidavit, a birth certificate, and sometimes a divorce decree or a spouse's death certificate, all apostilled or attested for the country where the marriage will take place.

What to do

  1. Ask the marriage registry abroad for its exact list and format.
  2. Get a single status certificate or affidavit, depending on your state and the country.
  3. Get your birth certificate, or a correction if details don't match your passport.
  4. Apostille or attest the documents for the destination country.
  5. Get translations if the registry asks for them.

Common questions

How long is a single status certificate valid? Many countries accept it only if it is recent, often within three to six months. Check before you apply.

Can I get it without coming to India? Usually yes, with an affidavit signed abroad or through someone you authorise.
