Tax and money in India for NRIs: what to keep in order

What NRIs should keep in order in India: PAN status, income tax returns, old provident fund, bank KYC and sending money abroad.

Updated 30 October 2026

Most NRI money problems in India come from out-of-date records: a PAN still marked resident, bank KYC that has lapsed, an old EPF account nobody claimed, or rent with too much TDS deducted. Fix the records first, file a return when you have Indian income, and use Forms 15CA and 15CB to move money abroad.

What to do

  1. Check your PAN shows you as non-resident and is not inoperative.
  2. Update KYC on your NRE and NRO accounts.
  3. File an Indian tax return if you have Indian income, or TDS to claim back.
  4. Claim your old EPF if you have left Indian employment.
  5. Send money abroad from your NRO account with Forms 15CA and 15CB.

Common questions

Do I need to file a return in India? If your Indian income is above the basic exemption limit, or you want back excess TDS, yes.

How much can I send abroad from NRO? Up to USD 1 million a financial year, after tax, with the right paperwork.
